Nearly Next Year

When a baseball team can win more than 10,000 games and still lose for the past hundred years, you know there’s something special about them. This blog is your guide to the Chicago Cubs: the team’s fans, fortunes, history and hype. Diehard Cubs fan Matt Paolelli breaks down the Cubbie culture that pervades Chicago every summer.

Is there a Cubbie Occurrence that Matt should be aware of? Drop him a line at nearlynextyear@gmail.com

Love Me/Date Me

Some people just seem to have it all. A comfy job, their health and wealth, and a sweet honey to come home to on these freezing Chicago winter nights. And to those who fall into that category, I say congrats! You've got it made! But for all of you who stumble in to your studio apartment from a night of cat-and-mouse at some Wrigleyville bar, to find the only sweetie waiting for you is a pint of Half Baked, I say "This blog is for you!" And me. And all brave Chicagoans who are committed to dating.

So many times we've heard the adage that having kids will change your life. Now my wife Bea and I are ready to find out. We're welcoming a new member into our family, a son we plan on naming Matthew, but once he comes out, who knows, maybe we'll name him Dweezil.

Follow us on our exciting adventures as we hit the sack at 8 p.m. to try to get some sleep and then wake up at 10 p.m., midnight, 2 a.m., 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. to feed the baby and change his diaper. Oh, this is going to be great!

Chicago River Blog

The Chicago River is more than a conduit for tourists and green dye. It's an unnatural wonder. We killed it with sewage and made it bubble with decomposing pig offal. We dug it out, encased it in concrete, and reversed its flow, connecting America's two mighty water systems, the Great Lakes and Mississippi River basins. The Chicago River Blog will tell the story of the river that defines our city.

Justice for Savory

When Johnnie Lee Savory was 14 years old, he was falsely accused and unjustly convicted of a double homicide in his hometown of Peoria, Illinois. In 2006, after spending 30 years in prison, Savory was granted parole and released.

Though a free man today, society still considers Savory an ex-felon, which is why he is asking Governor Rod Blagojevich to order DNA testing of the evidence that was used to convict him.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words -- especially if its subject is gentrification. This blog aims to bypass Chicago's never-ending debate about that controversial and over-used word, and head straight to its often hideous results: condos. Think of it as visual venting for Chicago's aesthetically offended residents.

We see them everyday. Sometimes we acknowledge them, and sometimes we don't. Sometimes we give them change or nervous glances...sometimes. But what if just one time we gave them an ear? Would they have something to say? Of all the Chicagoans pounding the pavement everyday, surely these drifters have the most compelling stories. If we actually stopped to listen, what would the dialogue with a vagabond teach us?

Unpaved Paradise speaks to all those Chicago dwellers caught somewhere in between urban loving and outdoors thriving. For those conflicted souls, here are one girl's musings about how to have your cake and eat it too. You don't have to leave the city to get your fill of nature; explore ways to take advantage of the urban life out of doors and the miles beyond magnificent miles of open lakefront. Forget paving paradise and putting in parking lots. Here's to you, Daniel Burnham: Forever open, clear and free – let it be.
