Joy Mann had to base her sketch only on the charred face of a young woman.
The woman was found in a smoldering dumpster on a wintery January day outside Borg-Warner Automotive Inc. in Lombard. Police removed the badly burned body and called Mann, a forensic artist, to do a post-mortem sketch of the face so they could air the picture on the 10 p.m. news.

Chicago "Burners" took over the Empire Room in the Palmer House Hilton and transformed it into the Chicago Underground Art School. The Art School hosted a wide array of artistic explorations to show Chicagoans how to be a kid again with tables offering mask making for a photo shoot to creating "Zine" pages for a T-shirt to manipulating video with a magic torch. Ground was broken Tuesday on a West Loop site for what will be Chicago's first green residential building.
“This project will not only stand in the history of Chicago, but I believe in this country and in the world,” Mayor Richard M. Daley said.
Not only is the planned 50-story apartment Chicago’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design registered building, but it marks the first time a new apartment tower has been built in the Loop during the past 15 years.
For many Chicagoans, the warmth of home is found in a bungalow. Bungalows are memories of baking chocolate chip cookies at grandma’s house, block parties on Independence Day, the smell of babies and friendly, familiar, smiling faces. They are constant reminders of the past.
“People long for the kinds of things they remember as children,” said real estate agent Mark Ahlheim about homebuyers and their attraction to bungalows.

Some sketches show children riding bikes, playing soccer and beating drums. Others show images of flowers, family and home.
The crayon and pencil drawings, matted on burlap sacks, are familiar creations made by young children.
But these sketches show other things: A tanker dumping "poisdus chemicals" into a river. A child-like figure huddled in a doorway as a machete-wielding man approaches. Stick figures are shooting each other.
