Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood has changed a lot over the last few years.
For more than two decades, Helen Shiller has served the 46th ward as alderman, but many residents question whether she has been able to keep up with those changes or adequately respond to the demands of her constituency.
Uptown has long been a refuge for the poor and less fortunate. A major port of entry, the neighborhood welcomed new immigrants and continues to be one of the city’s most diverse communities.

Tax increment financing has become a hot issue in Chicago, drawing many high-profile critics in both the media and government. Its detractors say the system lacks transparency and that the money ends up in a huge slush fund for the mayor to play with.
TIFs work by freezing the amount of money a district pays into city services for 23 years. As property values go up, the extra property tax money is used to pay for projects in the community.
In theory, this system is supposed to be used in blighted areas to spur development. The reality is a little different.
Read Full Story »The City Council Zoning Committee approved the controversial plan to relocate the Chicago Children's Museum from Navy Pier to Grant Park in a 6-3 vote Thursday afternoon.
The proposal still has to be voted on by the entire City Council.
The vote followed nearly six hours of sometimes contentious testimony by opponents and proponents in packed council chambers.
Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd), whose ward includes Grant Park, was greeted like a rock star with a flood of cheering applause when he entered the chamber. Reilly has continuously rallied for support against the museum proposal, in defiance of Mayor Richard M. Daley.
