The Loop, Chicago, Ill. —

Art Institute of Chicago conservators were trying to determine Monday the salvageability of a museum painting severely defaced while on loan in Pittsburgh.

The painting, "Night Sky #2," by Vija Celmins, reportedly was slashed May 16 while on display in the Carnegie Museum of Art.
