Art Institute of Chicago conservators were trying to determine Monday the salvageability of a museum painting severely defaced while on loan in Pittsburgh.
The painting, "Night Sky #2," by Vija Celmins, reportedly was slashed May 16 while on display in the Carnegie Museum of Art. Pittsburgh police disclosed last week they had arrested Timur Serebrykov, 27, who had been a contract security guard in the Carnegie. They alleged he attacked the work because he didn't like it.
Art Institute spokeswoman Erin Hogan said the 18-by-211/2-inch painting arrived in Chicago last week. "Our conservators are looking at it," she said, but gave no details of its condition.
